A walk-in interview occurs when an individual can interview for a job position without having a pre-scheduled appointment. In some cases, attending a job fair may qualify for this type of interview. Job candidates attending these events will often dress as if they are going to an interview and bring along a resume. Company recruiters will give on-the-spot interviews to candidates whom they believe will fit the company?s job profile. Large organizations may also hold a walk-in interview session at their location, allowing individuals to come in off the street to interview.

Job candidates will need to prepare for these interviews just like any other. Even though the company does not take interview appointments, it will most often have a scheduled time for the walk-in interview process. Dressing for the specific job type, having several resumes and reference lists on hand and preparing questions for the interviewer are still needed for this interview. Proper preparation can also set one job candidate apart from others, especially those who do not have sufficient documents available for the interviewer to review.

Disadvantages also exist for this interview process. For example, the company may only be interested in collecting information and conducting a five minute interview. Failing to make a good impression can result in a lost opportunity. Additionally, several other candidates can also be attending the interview. This creates immediate competition where interviewers will not likely call back certain individuals if they fail to meet the criteria of other individuals interviewing for the job.
