There are so many websites with job listings that it can be hard to know which sites are best for your job search.

Job boards are sites that post jobs submitted by employers.

Typically, the employers pay a fee to post their job listings. Monster is the largest and most well-known general job board.
The benefit to job boards is that companies list their open positions, so you know the jobs are available. Some companies only hire candidates that apply through the job boards they work with. The drawback, however, is that job boards often contain fewer listings than job search engines.

Niche Job Boards
There are a number of niche job boards that only post jobs within particular industries, or for particular types of people. Dice, for example, is a job board for tech jobs. There are other niche sites for industries like higher education, healthcare, and environmental jobs, as well as sites for entry-level jobs, summer jobs, and internships.

The benefit to niche job boards is that you can focus solely on jobs in your industry. However, if you are unsure of what industry you want to go into, you might want to avoid niche job boards, or check out boards for more than one industry.

Job Search Engines
Job search engines collect job listings from job boards and company websites. Two of the largest and most popular job search engines are Indeed and SimplyHired, which both have millions of listings at any time.

The benefit to job search engines is that there are listings from multiple sources, so you can see more job openings than on a job board.

Niche Job Search Engines
Niche job search engines search through job boards and company websites to post jobs related only to particular fields or industries. Examples include JobsOnTheMenu, an engine for restaurant careers, Green Job Bank, a site for environmental jobs.

Company Websites
If you know what company you want to work for, check out their company website for current job openings.
Company websites typically have a "Careers" or "Jobs" section that lists any job openings. Sometimes this section is under the "About Us" section.
Some larger companies allow you to search for job openings by keyword, location, and more. Often, you can even apply for these jobs directly on the website.

Jobs on Social Networking

Tips for Job Searching Online
Choose sites carefully. Don't waste your time looking at job sites that are not a good fit for you. A combination of general job search sites and niche sites will help you find the best job listing.
Do an "advanced search."  Narrow down your search right away to avoid getting job listings that don't fit your needs. Click on "advanced search" if the site has that option. From there, you can usually refine your search by keywords, location, and even company name.

Set up email job alerts. If there are one or two job sites that you find particularly useful, sign up for their email job alerts. Usually, the sites will send you a weekly or monthly list of jobs. You can narrow down your preferences to only receive jobs that interest you. However, avoid signing up for too many job alerts. You don't want to be overwhelmed with too many listings.

Post your resume. You should post your resume on at least one or two job sites to increase your exposure. Many employers look for job candidates on job boards and job search engines. However, if you are still employed, make sure you keep your job search confidential, so you don't jeopardize your current position.

Watch for scams and fees. Most job search sites do not charge you to job search or post your resume. Save your money and avoid sites that require you to pay a fee.
