Can you tell how many people are unemployed in the country? Can't be sure. About six years ago, about 27 lakh people were unemployed in the country. In the last six years, how many people became unemployed or how many people got jobs and lost unemployment, there is no calculation anywhere. Of course, many people have become unemployed due to Corona. Job market is also depressed due to slowdown in business. That statistic does not exist.

Through labor force survey we get information about unemployment, working people, size of labor force. Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) last conducted labor force survey six years ago. There was no further survey after that. Recently BBS conducted the next labor force survey. The results of that survey are not yet available. Even the number of people who became unemployed during Covid 19 is not available in official statistics.

Due to these reasons, the actual account of unemployed people is not available. But every year at least 2 million people enter the job market. It is not known how much their employment has been. Economists also have questions about the statistics given by the government. According to them, the actual number of unemployed is much higher than what the government gives.

The number of unemployed is 27 lakh or 1 crore

According to the latest Labor Force Survey 2017-16, the number of unemployed people in Bangladesh is around 27 lakh. The unemployment rate is 4.2 percent. They did not get an opportunity to work an hour a week, so they were marked as unemployed. It is not possible to cover all the expenses including food, travel, accommodation for a whole week by working one hour a week. So those who do not get an opportunity to work for even one hour a week are considered as unemployed in official statistics.

But BBS gives another account, that is, they work less than 35 hours a week, but they are not satisfied with that work. Simply put, many work as tutors, salespeople, ride-share workers like Uber-dispatchers to earn a living without looking for a job or job. They are considered imposters. As of 2016-17, the number of such unemployed is about 66 lakh. If we add the total unemployed to the pseudo unemployed, the number of unemployed is about 1 crore. Economists and researchers believe that the number of impersonators has increased due to Covid 19. A large number of them also run Uber-paths. Many others are involved in the work of salesmen.

In this regard, the executive director of the private research organization South Asian Network on Economic Modeling (SANEM) Salim Raihan told Prothom Alo that it is not known how many people have been unemployed for several years. The numbers shown in Bangladesh are not credible. Because no one can make a living by working one hour a week. BBS shows 2.7 million unemployed to show unemployment. It is not realistic. He also said that the calculation of unemployment that will be given now, will not get the picture of the large number of people who were unemployed during the Covid. Such a big event will not be in the statistics. This is not acceptable in any way.

According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the number of unemployed has further decreased as of the preliminary Labor Force Survey 2022. In the new survey, it fell below 4 percent, a responsible source said. The BBS is scheduled to release the preliminary results of the new Labor Force Survey tomorrow, Wednesday.

The battle of definitions does not reveal the true picture According to the International Labor Organization (ILO) definition, a person working for one hour a week is not considered unemployed. If a job seeker is unable to work for an hour a week for wages, they are considered unemployed. This is the international standard definition. However, the context of all countries is not the same. A person in Bangladesh cannot survive the whole week with the wages he gets for working one hour a week. And people in developed countries get wages for working one hour a week. Besides, they are given unemployment benefits by the state. As a result, they do not have much problem to meet the cost of living.

According to the definition of one hour of work per week for wages, the number of unemployed people in Bangladesh is low in official statistics. But the hypocrisy is too much. Those who are looking for work but are not getting work, they are forced to live unemployed life. They are called involuntary unemployment. There are three types of unemployment. Such as asymmetric unemployment, business cycle and structural unemployment.

If there is a shortfall between labor market demand and supply, it is called disproportionate unemployment. Such unemployment is seen in North Bengal and Haor region. Apart from this, unemployment often increases or decreases due to economic growth or recession. As the number of unemployed increased due to covid. Again, unemployment increases due to technological change. Such unemployment is called structural unemployment.

Artificial intelligence (AI) could cause "significant disruption" to the labor market and jeopardize millions of jobs around the world, if it lives up to its potential, Goldman Sachs has claimed.

Generative AI such as ChatGPT could replace up to 300 million full-time jobs worldwide, according to estimates shared in a report published by the investment bank on Sunday. The technology, which can independently create new material, represents "a major advancement with potentially large macroeconomic effects," Goldman Sachs argued.

Roughly two-thirds of jobs in the US and Europe are exposed to "some degree of AI automation," while generative AI could be used as a substitute for a quarter of current jobs.

"Despite significant uncertainty around the potential of generative AI, its ability to generate content that is indistinguishable from human-created output and to break down communication barriers between humans and machines reflects a major advancement with potentially large macroeconomic effects," Goldman Sachs said.

Upbeat economic outlook issued for ChinaREAD MORE: Upbeat economic outlook issued for China
At the same time, the report states that most industries are only "partially exposed to automation," making it more likely that they will be "complemented rather than substituted by AI." Some 7% of positions in the US could be replaced by AI, with 63% being complemented by the innovative technology and 30% being unaffected by it, according to estimates.

Goldman Sachs also claimed that historically positions that were displaced by automation were offset by the creation of new jobs and occupations, increasing the value of goods and services.

"The combination of significant labor cost savings, new job creation, and higher productivity for non-displaced workers raises the possibility of a productivity boom that raises economic growth substantially," the report said.

According to Goldman Sachs, widespread adoption of AI could eventually increase annual global GDP by 7%.

Assalamu Alaikum everyone! Ramadan Mubarak! 🌙

As we begin this holy month, let us reflect on the blessings and opportunities that it brings. Ramadan is a time for spiritual growth, self-reflection, and acts of charity. It is a time to strengthen our faith and deepen our connection with Allah.

During this month, we fast from dawn until sunset, abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs. Through this act of sacrifice, we learn to appreciate the blessings that Allah has bestowed upon us and to empathize with those who are less fortunate.

Let us also remember the importance of community and coming together during Ramadan. We break our fasts with family and friends, share meals with our neighbors, and perform acts of kindness and generosity towards those in need.

May this Ramadan bring you peace, happiness, and blessings. Ramadan Kareem! 🌙✨

IT Track / AI And You: How ChatGPT Can Ta...
Last post by arif - March 18, 2023, 10:57:48 AM

Generative AI is causing a big buzz at the moment. The ability of tools like ChatGPT and Dall-E 2 to create text and images from simple prompts to a standard that can often pass for human means everyone is wondering what this technology means for the future of work. Rather than making humans redundant, professionals are learning to use it to supercharge their work, automating mundane everyday tasks to carry out their jobs more quickly and efficiently.

However, it's important to remember that AI isn't – and may never be – a replacement for human intelligence. Understanding this means learning its limits and recognizing the situations where human skills, knowledge, judgment, and creativity are still vital.

Learning how to use this powerful new technology to augment our own capabilities while freeing up our time to focus on more challenging, higher-value work will be a key workplace skill for many professionals in the age of AI.

First, what is ChatGPT?

For those of you who may not have tried – or even heard of – ChatGPT yet, firstly, what's it like living on Mars? Secondly, the Cliff's Notes version is that it's a conversational interface (or chatbot) that understands and generates human languages. Think Alexa or Siri but far more advanced and capable of handling much more complex inquiries and responses.

It's an example of "generative AI" because it can use existing data to generate new outputs, ranging from poetry and fiction to emails, essays, blog posts, and even computer code. ChatGPT was created by Open AI, which is funded by a number of technology and venture capital firms, most prominently Microsoft, who recently invested $10 billion and are integrating it into their Bing search engine. To get a little more technical, ChatGPT itself is actually a user interface (UI) for OpenAI's large language model, called GPT-3. It was trained on a dataset consisting of over 175 billion pieces of information, including web pages, books, and articles in many different languages.

How Can Professionals Supercharge Their Abilities With ChatGPT and Generative AI?

A recent guest on my webinar was Dominic Allon, CEO of cloud CRM solutions provider Pipedrive. Discussing how professionals and businesses will integrate generative AI into their work, he told me, "It's helpful to reflect on how previous [technological advancements] have been integrated into the way we get work done.

"Sam Altman, CEO of Open AI, often uses the example of a calculator – how does a calculator change the way we figure out math problems and teach math?

"It actually got integrated into the way we work quite quickly; My expectation is this new tool – this ability to generate text quickly in a foundational, quite generic but logical manner will get embedded quite quickly into the way we work."

Many examples already exist of ways in which ChatGPT and related technologies can be used by professionals:

· Writers can use it to generate blogs, articles, and informational material.

· Teachers can use it to summarize educational material and create assignments.

· Financial professionals can automate bookkeeping and reporting.

· Lawyers can use it to summarize case law and quickly develop an understanding of areas of law that they have not previously studied.

· Marketers can use it to create ad copy and sales emails.

· Customer service agents can use it to generate responses to inquiries and compile FAQ documents on issues that are frequently raised.

· Healthcare professionals can use it to extract relevant information from medical records and examinations and compile reports and summaries of patient data.

Augment Your Skills With New Abilities

But that's just the start. Crucially, professionals can use it to augment their abilities to carry out tasks that might happen to fall outside of their skillset or area of expertise.

For example, a data analyst might be good at drawing conclusions based on charts and statistics but not great at writing these up into reports for their colleagues. This is where generative AI can step in, lending a hand with day-to-day activities and enabling professionals to spend their time on tasks where their strength lies.

Conversely, a writer can use their analytical abilities to augment their written work with statistics, even if they aren't great at statistical research and analysis themselves.

A teacher might be fantastic at drawing the best out of their students and encouraging them to achieve their potential in exams but not enjoy the process of creating lesson plans or designing learning material. They can put generative AI to work to fill in the blanks in their skillset and become a more rounded, capable professional.

And a computer programmer might instinctively know how to use their programming language of choice but find it hard to explain what their code is doing to a non-coder. Generative AI can annotate code and create human-language explanations of what's happening under the hood (and even spot bugs they might have missed.)

As Allon puts it, "What this will do is free up those professionals to do two things ... firstly to be more efficient and effective, and to own a wider scope of work. And secondly to [focus on] a higher level of cognitive tasks."

One example comes from his previous career at QuickBooks. Allon told me that once automated tools were in place to handle routine tasks such as reconciling transactions, accountants have been able to spend more time working directly with clients and developing their role as "trusted advisors" within their own organizations or with clients.

"The other point here," he continues, "is the role we all play in our different fields ... will continue to be critically important because typically ChatGPT will offer up a fairly generic answer, and it's always the case that you'll have to augment that with a particular point of view, or the right tone and style for your company, so for me it's about this combination of 'better together'".

The Way Forward

So, to summarize, there are three steps that we need to consider if we want to transform ourselves into supercharged, AI-augmented professionals. The first is to think about how AI can automate the routine and repetitive tasks we do every day.

Then we need to consider how it might expand our abilities and allow us to take on challenges that previously might have had us stumped or turning to others for help.

Last but by no means least, we need to think about how we can use the time we've freed up by harnessing generative AI to spend more time on truly human tasks. This means face-to-face time with clients, customers, and colleagues, as well as high-level strategic tasks, creative tasks, and work that requires us to come up with genuinely new ideas.

Taking this step-by-step approach is a great way to minimize our chances of being left behind by the AI revolution that's set to transform the world of work and make sure we're in the best position to continue to add value.

Skills Development through Competence

By Taskin Mustafa Choudhury, Management Consultant & Training Specialist

Competence is a combination of skills, work & knowledge which is reflected in professional behavior that can be observed, measured & evaluated.
Competence is a very good determining factor for successful performance.
People generally form an impression of any person or personality within a matter of a few minutes – its not necessarily fair but that's the reality.
In a professional setting an individual wants to appear as well as be competent – in other words – knowledgeable, skilled & capable.

The concept of competence is probably as old as humankind. Homo sapiens have always desired to master skills and to find ways to solve practical, professional and scientific challenges. Certain individuals always received the prerogative to perform certain activities which had a highly symbolic meaning. The attribution of authority was originally strongly related to tradition but that gradually moved to cognition and ability.

In the current meritocratic society, people are generally allocated to jobs based on educational achievement and their profile of capabilities and other personal characteristics. The drive of individuals to learn to perform in certain fields of activities, however, never changed, and is to a large extent based on eagerness to master certain skills, become independent and get recognition. This is very well visible in babies and toddlers when they want to turn in their cradle, crawl on the floor and walk in the room, stimulated by their parents who are cheering when the first steps are taken. Young children constantly move around until they are able to do what they desperately want at the end of the day: to gain independence; or: to become competent.

For gaining an independent position in society nowadays, individuals need to pass through formal education trajectories and complete examinations. The higher the education levels students achieve, the higher their chances of getting a good position at the labor market and an appointment in a better-paid and stable job. Independence, however, is a relative notion. In society, people are interdependent by definition, but individual ego development is necessary for getting a personal identity in the first place and a professional identity later in life, for which recognition is needed, by getting an appropriate education qualification, and subsequently by being appointed in a job, being promoted, rewarded, and having a career perspective.

Development opportunities are the top priority of graduates from higher education and considered to be a major labor condition. Because of the massification of education, it became an industry. And because of its limited innovation capacity, it somehow alienated from society. Getting a diploma became a goal in itself, many educational institutions were not well-aligned to societal demands anymore, and became pedagogical islands. Sometimes this process is called the 'diploma disease', but it can also be named the 'competence crisis', as the big issue was whether graduates who were qualified really were able to perform according to standards in the profession and expectations in the working situation. Having a college degree was no guarantee for being able to perform well on the job or in society in general.

The disconnection between education and the labor market was the main cause of the competence movement. Therefore, professional associations began to articulate performance requirements and develop competence profiles with which candidates had to comply to enter the profession. Educational institutes reworked their curricula to adjust them to what was expressed as being important by professional associations and industry organizations. However, as the concept of intelligence, the concept of competence was multi-dimensional, and various conceptions of professional competence emerged. Nevertheless, at present, the concept of competence is institutionalized now.
