Ever heard of bracketing?
If you decide to work with film when creating compositions in the future, you will consequentially have to work with the more traditional metering and bracketing techniques. Bracketing produces either lighter or darker versions of the same exact scene, which can be helpful if you aren't positive about the exposure you want to use.
If you want to bracket an image, simply make several different exposures of that same scene while increasing or decreasing the exposure (by adjusting your shutter speed, aperture, or both simultaneously). Most professional photographers try to bracket whenever they are able to, because it serves as a sort of safeguard to prevent having to reshoot anything that didn't come out quite right.
