What is an elevator pitch?

So the single most concrete piece of advice is for everyone to have an elevator speech to answer the question, so, what do you want to do? See 70% of jobs are gotten through referrals, and referrals happen when someone says, "Oh, I have the perfect person for this job." But that can't get activated unless you don't have the answer to the question of what you want to do, and what that is is I call it the elevator pitch.

It's a two sentence description of what you want to do and why. I've always been passionate about the environment. I want to work in a not-for-profit dedicated to prevent global warming. I'm passionate about the stock market. I want to find an entry level job in investing. That then becomes a tool. You say that to everybody out there, because, especially coming out of college at this season, they're going to say, "So Chip, what do you want "to do with your life?" And you want to have the short answer to that, because you never know who's going to then repeat that and it comes around.
