Pre- Interview Preparations
by Joy Darlington and Nancy Schuman

Chances are good that the person who invites you in for an interview will also offer to give you directions to the building. Take these directions! Even if you have a good idea of the location of the company, you'll want to know exactly where you are going.

If you are unfamiliar with the area, it might be a good idea to drive to the company before you actually have to meet for the interview. Map out the directions and time how long it will take for you to get there.

Before you go out the door, make sure you have the following items:

    Resume

    Cover letter

    Writing implement

Spare tie or pair of pantyhose

    List of professional references

Driver's license and social security card

Add a few extra minutes for traffic or any other unforeseen delays. Plan to arrive for the interview at least 10 to 15 minutes early.

When scheduling your interview, be sure you know the name of the person you will be meeting with. The person who calls to screen you over the phone is not always the same person you'll be interviewing with. Find out the person's name, title, and phone number. That way, if a problem arises, you can contact this person directly.
