Licensing and transfer
When it comes to intellectual property there are a couple of ways that you can transfer your interest. First, you can transfer your entire interest. This is called an assignment, you sell all of your rights and some particular piece of IP, or you can license rights and a piece of IP. A license is a fancy word for a contract that grants less than all of the rights in someone's IP. All intellectual property can be sold outright or it can be licensed. Most people do not sell their rights of publicity, instead they grant a sliver of rights to someone or to a company for a certain amount of time.
The contract that dictates how the rights of publicity will be used is called a license. With rights of publicity you can get something that is sort of like a license called a release. When you sell your rights you're giving away the whole enchilada. When you license you're saying to someone, "Here's a sliver of my rights for a period "of time and you can pay me X dollars." When you get a release you're basically taking a shortcut.
