Title: Five practices of exemplary leadership

?Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happen?- Alan Keith, Genetech

Model the way

    Behavior wins you respect.
You have to be a good example and live by what you say.
Open up your heart and let people know what you really think and believe.

Inspire a shared vision

Have a vision and dream of what it could be. Have absolute and total personal belief in those dreams and be confident in your abilities to make extraordinary things happen.

A person with no constituents is not a leader and people will not follow until they accept the vision as their own. Leaders cannot command commitment, only inspire it.

To enlist people in a vision, leaders must know their constituents and speak their language. People must believe that leaders understand their needs and have their interests at heart.

Challenge the process

Leaders are wiling to step out into the unknown. They search for opportunities to innovate, grow and improve.
Innovation comes from listening rather than telling.

Enable others to act

Grand dreams don?t become significant realities through the actions of a single person. They require team effort, solid trust and strong relationships.
Leaders make it possible for others to do good work. They know that those who are expected to produce results must feel a sense of personal power and ownership.

Encourage the heart

Recognize contributions and appreciate the people working for you.
    Celebrate values and victories.
