Should I change jobs if I'm the smartest person in the room?

A. If you're the smartest person in the room, it's probably a good time for a job change. Often, we grow when we're not the smartest person in the room because we're able to learn from others who are more knowledgeable than we are.

Being the smartest in the room can be boring. When it comes to accumulating information and resources, you gain little by constantly sharing your formidable knowledge with others rather than having a balanced exchange of give and take.

Think of it like playing tennis: In the sport, it could get boring playing with people beneath your abilities. They're hitting the ball into the net and out of bounds, so you don't get much actual playing time. However, when you play with someone at your ability or higher, it raises your game!
