Here is why skill-based assessment is necessary for the development of an organisational workforce.

The importance of skill-based assessments in the development of an organisational workforce.

In an era defined by swift technological progress, coupled with the ever-evolving needs of the industry, the urgency to bridge the gap between education and employability has reached its peak. While the job readiness of our young graduates has been a subject of discussion for several years, according to a recent report, only 45% of Indian graduates who are on the lookout for jobs possess the necessary skills to meet the needs of industry.

This statistic further emphasises the immediate requirement for skill-based assessments, thereby acting as a crucial element in fostering a capable workforce for the future.

Mr Sachin Jain, Country Manager, ETS India, and South Asia, shares his insights on the importance of skill-based assessments and their vital role in the development of an organisational workforce.

Evaluating for the Right Skill Set is Important

In today's job environment, the employers' demand extends beyond mere technical expertise; it encompasses refined communication skills, astute critical thinking, adaptability, and adept problem-solving capabilities—qualities that seamlessly integrate into the intricate fabric of a dynamic workplace.

While it is common to have employers use skills assessments during the hiring process to determine if candidates are a good match for an open position, employers are increasingly using these assessments even for existing employees to chart their future progression based on their strengths.

Evolving Job Roles and the Need for Newer Skills

The significance of possessing cognitive and non-cognitive skills has become more pronounced as job responsibilities continuously shift and novel industries come to the forefront. As technology advances, skills that once held great importance often tend to lose their relevance.

Skill-based assessments help individuals identify their strengths and areas that might need further development. Employees or learners can then tailor their learning journey towards essential skills pertinent to their chosen career paths.

This proactive stance not only sustains employability but also nurtures a culture of perpetual learning, where adaptability emerges as a pivotal element for achieving professional triumph.

Ensuring Role Fitment Early

Today, talent sourcing is one of the major challenges for most organizations. Skill-based workforce assessments are a great way to assess existing talent and progress in those who exhibit the right skill set and traits.

Effective Learning and Development Programmes: Learn and Assess

Learning on the job is one of the key drivers of a great work culture. Modern-day organizations profess the idea that picking up a new skill or a course while on the job is integral to personal and professional growth.

Learning and development programmes today figure right on top of any HR agenda today. One of the great ways to foster an effective learning environment is to have formative or skill-based assessments – these are less stressful, and employees are less likely to be intimidated at the prospect of taking these.

Credentialing Workplace Skills Through Assessment

As per the new National Credit framework (NCrF) under NEP 2020, the inclusion of credits based on skill-based assessments is a noteworthy addition.

Such assessments can help to enhance knowledge efficacy levels besides enabling students to earn credits outside the formal education sphere. In the day and age of credit transfers and multiple entry/ exit formats, both being driven by NEP 2020, credits based on such assessments can spur a learning culture in organizations.

Similarly, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently released revised guidelines (Jeevan Kaushal 2.0) for the introduction of life skill courses for UG students – highlighting the relevance of soft skills. These life skills include communication skills, professional skills, leadership and management skills, and universal human values.

As an example, under the National Higher Education Qualification Framework (NHEQF), and National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF), academic institutions can work closely with skilling and assessment organizations to develop courses and assessments on attributes such as critical thinking, verbal reasoning, analytical writing, business communication, etc. enabling students to earn credits outside their core program domain but very critical for success in their careers.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, given that the landscape of workforce development is evolving, NEP 2020 has rightfully underscored the importance of skills in the holistic development of students.

What is self-employment?
Self-employment represents a shift away from traditional employment structures. This might mean providing freelance writing services, developing web designs for businesses or offering personal training sessions to health-conscious clients.

Becoming self-employed is more than just doing what you love; it's about taking charge of your lifestyle. It's about setting your own hours, creating your own schedule and balancing your professional and personal life in a way that suits you best.

The advantages of this lifestyle could range from increased flexibility to more control over your income and, of course, the ability to work in your preferred environment, be it from the comfort of your home or a beachside café.

Becoming your own boss offers a unique kind of career satisfaction. As a business owner, you're more than just an employee; you're at the helm, making decisions that shape your business and, by extension, your life.

Below is a look at some of the best self-employed jobs for today's market and the reasons these might be a fit for you. Whether you're looking for a full-time venture or a part-time side hustle, the opportunities are vast and varied.

What are the best self-employed jobs?
Are you good with computers? The ever-growing internet may be the place for your next self-employed business venture.

1. Freelance writer and blogger
Freelance writing and blogging offer incredible opportunities for those with a knack for words and storytelling. As a freelance writer or blogger, you create content for clients ranging from articles and blog posts to social media updates and newsletters.

The demand for quality content is high as businesses increasingly realize the importance of compelling content in connecting with their audience and driving growth.

LinkedIn and other professional networking platforms can serve as valuable resources for finding freelance writing opportunities. With the ability to set your own hours and work from virtually anywhere, freelance writing can be an attractive side hustle or even a full-time career, providing substantial income potential depending on your expertise and clients.

2. Graphic designer and web designer
In the digital age, visual appeal is everything. As a graphic or web designer, your skills can be in high demand. Whether creating captivating logos, designing intuitive websites or producing eye-catching social media graphics, your work plays a crucial role in helping businesses establish a strong online presence. While a bachelor's degree in design can be beneficial, a robust portfolio often speaks louder than formal education in this field.

This career path offers flexibility and variety, with opportunities to work on a freelance basis, collaborate with a design agency or even work in-house within a company. The average salary for these roles is enticing, varying based on experience, location and the complexity of the projects you take on.

This career path requires a high school diploma, a valid driver's license, a clean driving record and a willingness to work irregular hours to accommodate clients' schedules. Being a real estate agent means you're in control of your career. You set your own hours, choose the clients you want to work with and have the power to negotiate your commission rates. This flexibility is just one of many reasons why becoming a real estate agent can be a rewarding self-employment opportunity.

4. Virtual assistant

A virtual assistant performs administrative tasks remotely, which can include anything from managing emails and schedules to handling social media accounts or data entry. Strong organization and communication skills are essential in this role, but the most attractive aspect of being a virtual assistant is the ability to work from anywhere. Whether you want to earn extra money on the side or make this your full-time job, being a virtual assistant offers both flexibility and variety in your work.

6. Product creator
Do you have an idea for a product that fills a gap in the market? If so, becoming a product creator might be the perfect self-employed job for you. Whether it's an innovative kitchen gadget, a new line of organic skincare products or a series of educational toys for children, creating a product requires creativity, persistence and a keen understanding of your target market. You can sell your products on various platforms like Amazon, Etsy or your own ecommerce website, reaching customers around the globe.

7. Lawn care specialist
If you prefer working outdoors and have a green thumb, starting a lawn care business could be an excellent choice. As a lawn care specialist, you offer services such as mowing, edging, fertilizing and landscaping.

This type of work is in high demand, particularly during the warmer months, and offers the chance to work outside and stay physically active.

8. Home organizer
For those with a knack for organization and a keen eye for detail, a home-organizing business can be a rewarding venture. As a professional organizer, you help clients declutter their spaces and develop systems to keep their homes tidy.

This can be a particularly satisfying job for those who enjoy transforming chaotic spaces into serene, orderly ones.

9. Fitness equipment manufacturer
If you're passionate about fitness and have an idea for a unique piece of workout equipment, manufacturing fitness equipment could be an ideal business opportunity.

It could be anything from a new type of weightlifting gear to an innovative yoga prop. Remember, the success of such a product depends on its effectiveness, quality and uniqueness in the market.

10. Furniture upcycler
In the era of sustainability, upcycling has become a popular trend. If you enjoy working with your hands and have a flair for design, consider starting a furniture upcycling business.

As you scroll through the listings and marketplaces on eBay, Facebook and Craigslist, take a look at just how cheap you could get certain pieces of furniture, if not free. That's nothing but income.

You can find old pieces of furniture, restore or creatively repurpose them and sell them for a profit. This business idea is not only eco-friendly but can also be quite profitable.

11. Handyman
You might consider starting a handyman business if you're good at fixing things and enjoy working with your hands. From minor home repairs to larger renovation projects, handymen are always in demand. This career allows you to work on a variety of projects, ensuring no two days are the same.

Remember, each of these physical and product-based jobs requires not only a specific set of skills but also a level of physical fitness and a willingness to get your hands dirty. If that sounds appealing, these job ideas may well suit you.

Be your own boss
If you're looking for more than just a job and have an entrepreneurial spirit, starting your own business can be an excellent self-employment opportunity. This could mean opening your own brick-and-mortar store, becoming a specialized business consultant, event planner, career coach or even starting an ecommerce business.

From freelance writing and graphic design to real estate and childcare, there's a wide array of self-employed jobs in today's market. Whether you're seeking a side hustle to supplement your income or a full-time career that allows you to be your own boss, there's likely an opportunity that aligns with your skills and interests.

Writing a Professional Termination Letter: A Step-by-Step Guide

A termination letter, also known as a pink slip or a notice of termination, is a formal document that is used to terminate an employee's employment with a company. The letter serves as a formal notice to the employee that their employment has ended and also provides the reason for the termination.

The Importance of Compliance and Transparency in Termination Letters"

There are several reasons why a company may choose to terminate an employee's employment, including poor performance, violation of company policies, or economic reasons. Regardless of the reason, it is important for the company to handle the termination process in a professional and respectful manner.

One of the key elements of a termination letter is the reason for the termination. The letter should clearly state the reason for the termination and provide any relevant information or documentation to support the decision. It is important to be honest and transparent in the letter, while also being mindful of the employee's rights and privacy.

Another important aspect of a termination letter is the notice period. Most companies will provide a notice period, which gives the employee time to find a new job and make the necessary arrangements. The notice period can vary depending on the company's policies and the employee's position, and it is important for the company to abide by any legal requirements regarding notice periods.

In addition to the reason for the termination and the notice period, the letter should also include information about the employee's final paycheck, any benefits that the employee is entitled to, and any other relevant information.

It's also important to have a clear plan for how the company will handle the transition after the termination. For example, will the employee be replaced, and if so, how will the company handle the recruitment process? Will the employee's responsibilities be divided among existing staff, or will the company hire a temporary employee to cover the gap? This can help to minimize disruption to the business and ensure that the employee's responsibilities are handled effectively.

"Writing a Termination Letter: A Step-by-Step Guide"

When writing a termination letter, it's important to use a professional tone and avoid using any language that could be considered offensive or discriminatory. The letter should be clear and concise, and should not include any personal opinions or biases.

In summary, a termination letter is a formal document that is used to terminate an employee's employment with a company. The letter should include the reason for the termination, the notice period, information about the employee's final paycheck and benefits, and any other relevant information. It's important to handle the termination process in a professional and respectful manner and to have a clear plan for how the company will handle the transition.

It's also important to consider the legal implications of a termination. Different countries and states have different laws regarding termination, and it's crucial for companies to be aware of and comply with these laws. For example, some states have laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of certain characteristics, such as race, gender, or age. Additionally, companies must also comply with laws regarding notice periods and severance pay.

To avoid any legal issues, it's recommended that companies consult with a lawyer or HR professional before issuing a termination letter. They can provide guidance on the legal requirements and help to ensure that the letter is written in compliance with the laws.

Furthermore, it's important to consider the potential impact of the termination on the employee. Losing a job can be a difficult and stressful experience, and it's important to handle the situation with empathy and compassion. The company should offer support and resources to help the employee transition to a new job, such as providing job search assistance or career counseling.

It's also important to consider the impact of the termination on the remaining employees. If the terminated employee was a member of a team, it's important to communicate the reason for the termination to the remaining team members in a clear and professional manner. This can help to minimize any confusion or disruption to the team and help to maintain a positive work environment.

Writing a Termination Letter: The Art of Effective and Respectful Communication

In conclusion, a termination letter is a serious document that should be handled with care and professionalism. It should include all the necessary information, comply with legal requirements, and be written in a clear and professional tone. Companies should also consider the impact of the termination on the employee and remaining employees, and offer support and resources to help the employee transition to a new job. Another important aspect to consider when writing a transfer letter is to tailor it to the specific company and department to which you are applying. For example, if you are applying for a transfer to the marketing department, you should highlight your experience in marketing, your knowledge of the latest marketing strategies, and your ability to work with a team.

Record demand for H-2B Visas to USA amid workforce shortage

Dhaka: The United States of America received more H-2B visa applications for the year's first-half allotment than total visas available, announced the US Department of Labour.

Commenting on the matter, Tori Emerson Barnes, Executive Vice President of Public Affairs and Policy, US Travel Association, said, "The overwhelming demand for H-2B worker visas—the earliest the first-half cap has ever been met—is further proof that this highly successful programme should expand to meet the country's workforce demand."

"With nearly 10 million job openings across the US economy, and 1.4 million in the leisure and hospitality sector alone, there are simply not enough American workers to meet hiring needs," he added.

"The federal government can address these critical workforce shortages—and spur the US economy—by increasing the cap on H-2B temporary worker visas."

It may be mentioned here, every year, half of the 66,000 available H-2B visas are released on April 1 and October 1.

Demand for workers for the second half of the year, which includes the busy summer months, routinely exceeds the allotment; this has not been the case, until now, for the first half of the year.
