As a Manager, your effect on employee motivation is profound. Your choice of words, body language and facial expressions project your opinion of their value to the people you work with.

Here are some tips.

Set the tone when you arrive at work

Begin the day with a smile. Walk upright and confidently. Walk around and greet people. Let the staff be aware that it's going to be a great day. It begins with you.

Pick your words

Use simple, powerful and motivational words to show that you value your staff. It is as simple as "please", "thank-you" and "you are doing a great job".

Clarify expectations

Communicate your expectations clearly and ensure you get feedback from the employee so you know that they understand. Remember, it's not a one-way discussion or a teacher-student equation. SHARE the goals and reasons for doing the task or project.

Provide feedback

Your staff need to know whether they have done a project well or not. Set up a weekly timetable and ensure that feedback happens.

Reward and discipline

Employees need reward and recognition for positive contributions. Likewise, there needs to be a disciplinary system for when they fail to perform effectively. Nothing harms positive motivation more than unaddressed problems.
