Skills Important For A Career In IT

The information technology (IT) field is booming, the IT field is expected to grow faster than average across all occupations.

A 4 year degree is generally a prerequisite for IT positions, and a graduate degree is preferred for management roles.

Budding IT professionals should take note that companies are aggressively hiring in the IT field. Here are some skills that experts say will help a job seeker capture the attention of hiring managers and succeed in the IT field.

Adaptability

The IT industry is changing rapidly, and everyone in the industry is on their toes. The
ability to keep pace with changing technologies and the willingness to
learn new skills are vital in this industry. Look for opportunities to
expand your technical skills and program knowledge on the job.  Take
advantage of professional training courses and certifications through
industry associations and local university extension services.  Not only
will this give you more marketable skills, it will also show your
potential employer that you are an able self-starter and someone who is
serious about working in the industry.

Project Management

Being
able to manage various projects at the same time is key to a successful
career in IT. Those who can demonstrate effective project management
capabilities will be in high demand. Companies are looking for qualified
applicants who can demonstrate their success in taking a project from
inception to completion and possess effective project management
capabilities.

Business Savvy

While technical
knowledge is a must for a career in this field, applicants who can
enhance their IT resume with strong business management skills will be
even more attractive to prospective employers. This isn't to say an MBA
is needed, but IT workers who can bridge the technical world with their
business savvy will likely find more opportunities for career
advancement.

Coding Skills plus Communication

Being
fluent in ASP.Net, VB.net, XML, PHP, Java, C#, and C++ is very
important.  But it is also important to peek out from behind the coding
screen and be part of the team. A good coder who is an excellent team
player will always stand out.  "Rarely do they want people buried behind
the computer who aren't part of a team," said Grant Gordon, managing
director at Overland Park, to ComputerWorld. "They want someone with
Java who can also be a team lead or a project coordinator."
