The Path to A High-Paying Job

We here at CareerCast.com recently published our 2016 report on the highest paying jobs, as tracked by the Jobs Rated report. A trend readers may have noticed was the volume of healthcare professions that require MD certification, and that's a process that requires extensive schooling.



The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its own look into high-paying jobs this week, and no surprise, healthcare led the way among industries with six-figure salaries. Also of no surprise, managerial positions like those spotlighted in the CareerCast.com report ranked second.

Also of note, reflected both in the BLS study and our Jobs Rated examination, education matters. Despite the growing burden of student loan debt, reality is that an education does still pay more in the job market -- typically.

The BLS report finds that a Bachelor's degree is the most common requisite level of education for careers paying twice (or more) above the national median wage.

Doctorates are high-value; Masters degrees, less so.

Exceptions to the rule exist, though. Nuclear Power Reactor Operators and Commercial Airline Pilots, for example, offer paths to financially lucrative careers without requiring the traditional, four-year college education.

Vocational trade certification can lead to high-paying possibilities. Of the careers the BLS spotlights, several technician fields typically pay more than twice the national median wage. These are jobs requiring specialized training, albeit not through college courses.
