Preparation is a critical component of professional development. Preparing for the interview or event is almost as important as the interview or event itself. The key to successful interviewing and networking is knowing who you are, being able to concisely express your skills and strengths pertaining to the industry and knowing as much as possible about the organization with which you are meeting.
First impressions are important in this professional relationship building process. To make the best first impression you should: practice your 30-second pitch, dress professionally at your interview, at all networking events, and in any situation in which you may be viewed by prospective employers.
There are several steps to making a fair, event or interview work well for you. The events are opportunities to create professional relationships with potential colleagues interested in the same industry as you.
Know which organizations are attending the fair or networking event and research them online or through your network of faculty and friends
Prepare questions about organizations
Wear a professional outfit
Develop and practice your 30-second pitch (video)
Know where the interview or event is to take place and arrive 15 minutes early
Come prepared with your own questions
Take notes during the interview to help you keep your thoughts organized
Jot down info on the back of business cards so you can remember what you discussed and refer to that conversation in your thank-you note
