How will AI change our lives in the next 10 years?

AI has already changed out lives today. I think the question of how it can change it further is more a question of how many more real-world applications will there be? Currently, we already have AI pervading our software systems, particularly those that we, as consumers, use everyday.

But we live in a very physical world where we interact mostly with physical objects. Unfortunately AI hasn't really come a very long way there and many of the advances in deep learning on the research side are only now finding their mainstream applications.

In the next 10 years, these physical applications (I would also include AR / VR in this since they aim to augment these physical applications) are going to be where AI plays the biggest role.

We will wake up to an alarm clock that has been optimally set based on our personal sleep patterns (because we will all wear some form of monitor to monitor all of our brain waves and vitals), walk over to the kitchen and have our breakfast already made based on what ingredients are most optimal to keep you going for the rest of the day before lunch. And that's just the morning.

While you're in transit in your self-driving car, you will read articles while the car automatically finds the best audio to complement your reading. If you are a chronic multi-tasker, you may even be hearing one piece of news while reading another.

As you approach work you'll look to your calendar to see your first commitment. Although last night it was at 8a, you see that it has dynamically changed to 8:13a based on the availabilities of the attendees. Looks like you have some time to grab some coffee!

After your first meeting, your calendar suggests you spend 30 minutes reading email. Just as you start you try to access Facebook and Twitter, you automatically see your calendar move the email block to 45 min, 10 minutes pass, 1 hr. Without focus, the tasks take longer and longer, and your lack of productivity now has caused the system to send a warning to other attendees of your 10a that you may be late. Next up, you handle some customer inquiries, only to find that you have none today, and that they were all handled by the automated customer support. Finally, it's time to ideate on new business strategies with your team. Before you even start, you already have a huge list of suggestions. Some were manually put in, but the vast majority were suggested by the system that analyzes all internal documents. By 7p, you're done with work and ready to go home.

First, your calendar, recognizing that you have left work suggests you go to the gym and keeps your gym clothes ready. Before you get there you already have your entire regimen set to optimize of upper body building. By 8p, you're done and ready to head to dinner.

When you come home you are met my your house "Welcome Home!" and are greeted by your family. You proceed to the dinner table where your takeout order was automatically ordered because it knew it was pizza Tuesday.

Finally once, you're all done with dinner you sit down in the living room where the TV automatically turns on and asks "do you want to watch Fuller House?" since you're there with your family. When you say no, it proceeds to present a number of different options which you can select with your voice. As you sit down you are pinged by your phone which is dynamically rearranging your workday for tomorrow based on an email by a client. Looks like you have a 6a! Guess you'll have to sleep early.

You wake up the next day and then you do it all over again. There are many other permutations of what the day will look like in the next 10 years, but if you're interested in some of the details of what type of algorithms AI are at the forefront of research today I would suggest checking out the answer to this question:

What are the likely AI advancements that we will see between now and 2027?

At the end of the day, humans will be the ones who drive these changes with platforms like Github, Kaggle, and Datmo, things are moving fast with new breakthroughs coming up at a breakneck pace. It's up to us however to make these a reality. Here's to human ingenuity!
