How to Update Your Resume

One size doesn?t fit all and neither does the same resume. If you are planning to change your job or switch careers, a new resume is what you might need. Here?s how you can update that resume and make it look appropriate for the new job profile or designation you are applying for.

Arrange chronologically

Make sure you mention the most important skills that you posses and will need for your future career clearly and extensively. ?You have to be able to judge what skills need more attention for your new career,? explains HR consultant Emily Ferreira.

Fresh letter

You will need to word your cover letter differently to make it more convincing. According to Hetal Shah, an HR consultant, ?If you don?t have a background in the career you plan to shift into, you will have to do better research to understand the new industry and word accordingly so that you sound persuasive.?

Get functional

It has to sound like you are keen on getting this job and you have to make the employer think you deserve it. So, make sure you have at least some qualifications to make it appear as if you are cut for the job.

Highlight

According to Hetal, ?If you have some qualifications that can help you in your new career choice, mention them. Even if you have used some of these skills in your previous career that would be needed more often presently, always mention them.?

You will either need to update your referees, or get new ones in case your employer would want to cross check. Ferreira says, ?You should mention people who know you possess the required skills.?

With these tips, changing your career should be smooth. However, remember how you present yourself in the interview is what is going to cinch the deal.
