Career Requirements

Skills
Multimedia designers need to have a firm grasp on how to generate content that will visually stimulate consumers and convey their message. An understanding of aesthetics and communication is necessary.

Depending on the particular field of design, multimedia careers generally require proficiency in JavaScript, XML, HTML, and various forms of software. Designers need to stay informed of any changes in the technology they use and are often required to complete research and training on new developments. Multimedia specialists also need to be aware of changes in consumer trends and popular taste.

Education
Most jobs in the field of multimedia design require bachelor's degrees in graphic design or fine art. For students seeking specialization in certain areas of multimedia design, postsecondary art and design institutions offer programs that center around studio production. Coursework for graphic and multimedia design students includes design principles, graphic and website design, art history, publishing, and visual communications. Generally, college coursework allows students to build a portfolio that showcases their abilities.

Multimedia artists and animators can benefit from a bachelor's degree in their field because it will give them an opportunity to develop connections in their industry and build a portfolio of work to showcase their talents. A career as an art director or graphic designer are other options with this degree. Keeping up with technology in the field and consumer trends is important for this line of work.
