What is job satisfaction and why it is important?

Job satisfaction as it is described by Locke (1976), is the "result of a person's evaluation of job and job experience". In general it includes employees' feelings towards their work. Naturally, employees that feel positive about their job are more willing and able to give it their full attention.

Abraham found in 2012 that employee engagement leads to higher productivity and better performance. The only way to achieve this engagement, however, is job satisfaction. It increases organizational commitment (Igbaria & Guimaraes, 1993) and therefore the willingness to engage in not only the regular tasks, but also in extra work and effort. On the downside, a lack of job satisfaction increases employees' intention to leave (Igbaria & Guimaraes, 1993) and consequently affects turnover in the company. This causes costs, as the company needs to find and train an adequate replacement.
