Finding and managing apps- Android Tips and Tricks

- Of course you can easily find apps on your phone or tablet. Look at the home screen. When you can't find the app there, look in the apps drawer. These are good locations, but they're not the limit of finding and managing apps. For managing your apps, the Android Operating System offers two locations. The first location is found in the Play Store app. Open the Play Store app. Show the navigation drawer and choose My Apps. The screen lists apps you've installed from the Play Store, free or purchased.

The installed tab lists apps on the device. The all tab is a list of all the tabs you've obtained from the Play Store, whether or not they're installed on this particular device. The installed tab is also where you go when an app requires a manual update. Most apps update automatically, but when an app requires a manual update, it appears here. Tap the update all button to update the apps on the list. You may need to accept permissions for each of the apps. Tap the accept button each time you're prompted.

The permissions screen alerts you to features the app has access to. The second location for managing apps is found in the settings app. It's quickest to access the settings app from the quick actions drawer. Choose the apps item, which might also be titled app management on some Android gizmos. On Samsung devices, choose the general tab, and then choose application manager.

Here you see three tabs that list all apps on the device. Downloaded includes apps obtained from the Play Store. SD card shows apps installed on the SD card. This item may not appear if your Android lacks removable storage, as this device does. Running lists apps that are currently doing something, as well as services which include various activities done by the apps or the Android Operating System itself. The all tab lists all the apps installed on your phone or tablet, which includes Play Store apps, pre-installed apps, as well as those apps that come with Android.

To control an individual app, choose it from the app screen. I'll choose the calendar app. The app info screen features options that let you control the app, as well as to see what features it accesses. For example, the Force Stop button halts an app. It's similar to shutting down an app, although that's not a typical activity you do on an Android device. Instead, reserve using this button for those times when an app has become uncontrollable, or you can't otherwise stop it.

Those instances are rare, but they do happen. This is where you fix them. I'll choose another app, one that I've obtained from the Play Store. The uninstall button removes an app from your device. This button is redundant to the same button found in the Play Store app. You can uninstall apps there, or you can uninstall them here by using either uninstall button. I'll admit that the Play Store is a better location. Generally speaking, you don't need to mess with this screen unless you have a specific issue with an app. Another movie in this course offers additional information on managing apps, specifically with details on the buttons found on this screen, when and how to use them.
