Is Architectural Photography A Good Career?

Architectural Photography can be a very lucrative and fulfilling career. With the rising number of clients needing photos taken of buildings and other work, the demand has risen for pictures of architecture. The points below are some things to keep in mind before starting a career in this field.

Clients Are Key

Without clients, you have nothing. You will need to learn to network in order to get more clients. Everyday is an opportunity to gain more potential business. Many people have also learned the joys of architectural photography and are taking classes in order to become a professional. You need to set yourself apart from these people in order to stand out for the clients.

Patience

If you are not comfortable with spending time determining the best angles of a building or taking hundreds of shots to get the "right" one, this career is not for you. You may go weeks or even months before you get that perfect shot. You will not become a celebrity overnight. At first, it may be more of a hobby than a full-time career. You may spend more time developing that beautiful picture than selling your photos. Although it may take time, all that you need is that one client who loves your work and business will dramatically increase.

Be Ready For Anything

Anyone who thinks architectural photography is boring must never have been serious in the business. The ability to drop everything at the drop of a hat and rush to a scene to shoot is a necessity. You will not always have scenes and schedules to rely on in order to get your income.

Pay

In the beginning, you will not be in it for the money. The income will come with time but with the startup costs and equipment, the costs will far outweigh the pay. The more you keep at it, the more random shots you will get. This will keep the customers coming back. The more shots that you get, the more likely you are to get that perfect shot. The more skilled photographers can easily make a career out of architectural photography. The pay will come with skill and experience. As stated above, set yourself apart from others and you will easily gain more clients and pay.

Database

Although it may take you time to get your name out there, it will be well worth your time. There are architectural photographers who make a very decent living shooting photos for resorts and hotel chains. They then post these pictures online. They want these pictures to look their best in order to get hotel customers to visit and use their services. It is more important in this field to get those perfect shots. A small mistake may be a problem in traditional photography but it is catastrophic in this business.

While it may be difficult to get into the business, it is possible. Take your time, get your name out there and you will be well on your way to a career in architectural photography.
